Shichi-Go-San celebration for three year old children are primarily
for girls, although in some local areas, boys also celebrate this holiday
at the age of three. Flowers and hand drums (traditional
Japanese drums) are common designs on a kimono for this occasion.
The nagajyuban (an under kimono) is rose-colored with embroidery
on the collar.

Three years old girls usually wear a hifu, which is an outer kimono
that is a little padded jacket without sleeves adorned with
red and white ribbons. Instead of a regular obi, three year old
girls use a heko obi, which is long with a soft cord. It is tied
in a bow at the back. Girls often carry handbags with the same
design as the surface of their zori (sandals).
