itj-down.jpg (8740 bytes) What is Jiyuka?

Jiyuka is literally translated as "free flowers" and refers to the free style floral arrangement.  It is the inclusive name for all ikebana pieces that are created without conforming to any set pattern or form. Jiyuka permits us to go beyond established patterns and to exercise originality.

In jiyuka, ikebana arrangements are created to express an artist's idea or emotional reaction. This is in contrast to other forms of ikebana, in which the artist's main concern is how to grasp and present natural beauty. The focus in arranging jiyuka is to create a fine art piece that imparts an artist’s idea or mood by using organic or in some cases, non-organic materials.

As in all other art forms, jiyuka should reveal originality, as well as produce a strong aesthetic impact. Jiyuka emphasizes creativity and at the same time artistic organization.

There are two major categories in jiyuka.  They are naturalistic arrangements and design oriented arrangements.
